Untitled, colograph w/viscosity printing, 12" x 12"
I have begun a new series of intaglio prints that explore the technique of viscosity printing. This is a way of printing an intaglio plate with multiple colors in one pass through the press. My research has shown me that it is more complex than I imagined. The process begins with a plate that is etched to multiple depths. Then printing is done with inks that have been modified with various amounts of oil, and rolled onto the surface of the plate. Based on the principle that oilier inks will resist stiffer inks, the colors will repel one another or merge on the plate to form new colors.
This colograph is an experimental plate that I made to begin exploring viscosity printing. You will see more from it in the near future.
