Grid, monotype, 16" x 28"
Monotype is an exciting form of printmaking that straddles the line between painting and printmaking. It is printmaking because we build the image on a support (in this case, plexiglass), and then transfer it to a sheet of paper. It is like painting because each image us unique (mono), and the images are built more directly than other printmaking processes. But the exciting part happens after the image is built on the plate—when it is run through the press surprises always happen. A smoosh here, a hickup there, more ink where I didn't expect it...all of these things make pulling the print from the press almost like opening a Christmas present.
This print is loosely based on a study that I made this summer of a wheat field in the sun. Rather than physically describe the field, here I wanted to share what it felt like to stand before that field.
